Have you watched a college or professional basketball game lately? I don't mean yesterday or even the day before that. It is September and obviously basketball is not in season. When I say lately, I am referring to a NCAA or NBA basketball game played last season. In that context, have you seen a game lately? If you have, you may or may not have noticed an unusually large amount of low-cut basketball shoes that are currently adorning the feet of these players. What is going on here? Well, apparently the low-cut basketball shoe has become the shoe of choice for most basketball players, amateur and professional.
The low-cut basketball sneaker has historically been viewed as unacceptable footwear by most ballers. Wearing such a shoe was seen as an invitation to injury, an accident waiting to happen. Not anymore. The recent technology in basketball shoes and the comfort that a low-cut shoe provides, have created a tidal wave of great looking, high performance low-cut kicks.The Kobe Bryant signature sneaker line that began in 2008 was the beginning of the trend of wearing low-cut basketball shoes that is now sweeping the nation, and world. The Kobe IV was the first high performance low-cut basketball shoe that dared to take on the mid-cut basketball sneakers that dominated the hardcourt at the time.
In 2010, still daring the basketball shoe market to change it's ways, the Kobe V released in a wide variety of styles and colorways. More different styles and colorways ever seen on any one model of basketball shoes. The Kobe V did so, and dropped in an even lower cut version than seen on the Kobe IV.
One of the colorways released that year was daring indeed. The Kobe V "All-Star" edition was dropped in a Daring Red colorway and was made for Kobe Bryant's appearance in the 2010 NBA All-Star game. The Daring Red colorway also "dared" to use a wood-grained design, meant to replicate the hardwood of the basketball court, on the forefoot portion of the shoe's upper. It was a very innovative and creative design idea that had never been seen on a shoe before. The shoe also featured black on the midsole, Swoosh, laces,and the Kobe logo. The shoe also featured a translucent outsole. On the heel of the insole Nike placed an All-Star game patch that included Kobe's nickname "The Black Mamba", the year, and the words "Three X MVP".
Nike shoes for basketball have obviously evolved quite quickly over the last few years. Technological design has allowed them to dare to make the low-cut basketball shoes some of the most high performance, lightweight sneakers for the court. They are now more popular than ever.
